The Book of Abraham is often portrayed by LDS critics as a failed translation despite the historical and textual evidence being far more complex. Joseph Smith stated that the text was revealed through divine means while working with Egyptian papyri, but he never explained the precise mechanics of that process, leaving room for multiple faithful scholarly models, including inspiration independent of a one-to-one linguistic translation. Modern Egyptology shows that the surviving papyri fragments do not contain the Book of Abraham text verbatim; however, these fragments represent only a small portion of the original collection, and their relationship to the revealed text remains uncertain.
